Beyond the Founder story
A good Founder can be utterly invaluable to a growing business. But that dependency can stealthily start to slow down progress if you aren't careful.
Most Founder-led businesses hit this stage at some point...generally at the crucial moment where they start getting really ambitious about scaling.
Too many strategic decisions made on the basis: 'What would the Founder do?'
Too much of the culture based on the question: 'How did the Founder used to behave?'
Too much of the sell based on: 'What's the problem the Founder set out to solve?'
It's a balancing act, because it's the kind of clarity that comes from an individual that can give you so much momentum at the start.
But removing that dependency is something that you need to prepare for early, and come back to regularly.
At Ideas Fest recently, and I had the chance to hear from all kinds of Founders of businesses that have really hit the heights - and each had a moment where they had to establish strategic principles enabled their teams to fly.
This is something we've written about this week with Startups Magazine - you can read more about that here...
